My arm is healing well. I saw my surgeon, Dr. Richard Angelo of the Evergreen Orthopedic Center, on Friday to get a check-up and some new x-rays. The breaks in my radius are nearly fully healed on their own, and my clavicle is holding together perfectly and knitting quickly. I was given a referral to physical therapy, but told at the same time that I likely will not even need it, as I have not lost any flexibility or range of motion at all. I’ve got another checkup scheduled for April 1st where I will receive the final yes or no, but overall the odds look good for an appearance at the first WMRRA round at Pacific Raceways on April 4th!

In other, less sunny news, it looks like I may not be able to compete in the sixth round of the AMA Pro Racing Superbike championship at Miller Motorsports Park, as I had previously planned. The medical costs associated with my crash in Las Vegas and subsequent surgery have made it impossible to pay my own way to Miller, and I have been unable to procure enough sponsorship to make up the funds. If you are reading this and looking for an extremely cost-effective way to reach an audience of over 50,000 people in-person and millions more on television, please contact me as I would love work with you to get your brand out. The 2009 AMA Pro Racing Superbike series is run by the Daytona Motorsports Group, the same people who operate NASCAR and its associated series, and who really know how to put on a big show with mind-boggling exposure opportunities. At last year’s event there were nearly 80,000 people in attendance for the weekend, which hosted both the AMA and World Superbike championships.

There is always a silver lining to every cloud however, and the silver lining in this case is that if I am unable to make it this May, I will try to compete in a couple AFM events at Infineon instead. Doing so will earn me experience on yet another AMA track, and let me make a stronger debut in 2010. It will also make up some of the lost exposure for the sponsors I do have, without whom I wouldn’t be able to race at all, let alone compete on a national scale: Studio819 Photography, Performance Source, RaceTech Suspension, Adrenaline Freaks Trackdays, MorePower Racing, V-holdR Cameras, Vortex, and last but never least, PNWRiders.com.

“So, it looks like you’ll be OK without surgery…”

Yeah, right!

I suppose the Las Vegas ER doctor was correct in the sense that I would not die without surgery… but I sure as heck won’t heal without it.

Clavicle (going to get plated):

Proximal radial head (elbow, being left alone):

Distal radial head (wrist, in a splint for the next 6 weeks):

I go under the knife next Thursday, Feb 5th, with Dr. Richard Angelo. Being back in the saddle in time for WMRRA in April is “possible” – here’s hoping!

Tackling Road Atlanta!

Due to my finishes in the WERA National Challenge series, I qualified for and will be receiving an invitation to the WERA Grand National Finals invitational at Road Atlanta this October! Road Atlanta is a world-class racetrack that plays host to such events as the Petit Le Mans, the Ferrari Challenge, and of course the AMA Suzuki Superbike Showdown. The WERA Grand National Finals are the culmination of the WERA National Challenge and the various WERA regional series, and are invite-only to the top 15 riders of each class in each series. I will be heading down with Brandon Bones of Studio819 Photography, and fellow racers Brian Trudeau, Will Grenier, and Corey Baum of ClimaCover Racing, who have been turning many heads as novices, racking up top finishes in nearly every race they’ve entered.

Unfortunately, this will actually mean the end of my racing season locally, as I will not be able to afford both continuing to campaign in WMRRA/OMRRA and traveling to the Grand National Finals. However I will of course continue to attend events and do anything I can to support my teammates, and I will continue racing in WMRRA and OMRRA in 2009. To try to help defray some of the costs associated with traveling across the country to compete in such a large event, I will be soliciting further corporate sponsorship for my bike, leathers, and pit area. So, if you know of anyone looking for some cost-effective national exposure with an exciting, action-packed backdrop… send them my way :)

I am extremely excited for this opportunity and I owe it all to my sponsors, without whom I truly would not be able to race: Studio819 Photography, Adrenaline Freaks Track Days, Pennell Powersports/Bridgestone, MorePower Racing, VholdR Cameras, RaceTech Suspension, Vortex Racing, Powerstands Racing, Motorex Fluids, Pipercross Air Filters, JuniorMonkey Design, and last but never least PNWRIDERS.COM, the best motorcycle community anywhere!
